There is no doubt proper nutrition plays a major factor in sports training and performance. In fact, I believe nutrition is so important that in 2015 I became a Certified Nutrition Coach by one of the most reputable nutritional coaching organizations in the world, Precision Nutrition.
Sports nutrition can actually be a game changer in regards to the results you get from your training, and how well you perform during practice and competition. Unfortunately, most athletes don't really know the best foods to eat for their body type, which supplements to take or avoid and why, and what to eat before and after games and practices to maximize performance and recovery.
Below are several examples of why nutritional coaching is important:
Body Fat Reduction
Macronutrient Intake Regulation (Protein/Carbs/Fats)
Muscle Growth and Recovery
Overall Health and Immune System Strength
If you're a serious athlete, you need to be serious about your nutrition!
In order to be good at nutrition, you need to learn about it. So, Todd provides you with his exclusive "Sports Nutrition Handbook" to make sure you understand the various components of good eating, and the reason we recommend athletes eat certain ways to maximize their performance. You will have this guide as a helpful reminder as you encounter various situations throughout your athletic career.
Todd will perform an initial assessment to identify your current biometrics, determine your priority needs, and establish initial nutritional goals. This may involve the following:
Body Composition (% body fat, fat mass, lean mass)
Basal Metabolic Rate
Required Daily Caloric Intake
Blood Nutrient Analysis (if desired)
Meal planning is one of the most important aspects of achieving good nutrition. You need to know what to eat, when to eat it, and how much of it to eat! This can be done using Todd's easy to learn portion control charts, or Todd can provide you with a detailed 7 Day meal plan with the ability to track your meals and make modifications on your smart phone.
Although I promote good eating habits as the best form of a winning nutrition plan, I also know that getting all the daily required nutrients from the foods you eat can be challenging. Most athletes have challenging schedules that involve school, practices, meetings, training, traveling, and games. These conditions make it tough to consume all of the right foods when needed. So in addition to a structured dietary program, I believe athletes should utilize various supplements when needed. The supplements I usually promote are the ones I know have substantial research solidifying it's benefit. Supplements such as protein powders, recovery drinks, creatine, branched chain amino acids, glutamine, fish oils, and multi-vitamin/mineral are the most common that I support.
In order for a nutrition program to be successful, accountability is usually one of the biggest factors. When athletes sign up for nutritional coaching with Todd Norman, a big part of the program is the scheduled follow-ups. Not only do these keep athletes on track, it also gives Todd the ability to modify the program as needed to ensure goals are being achieved.
Follow up sessions may involve body composition checks, girth measurements, program adherence assessment, meal plan modifications, supplement education, and much more.
